Our stable two-person, sit-on-top sea kayaks provide the ideal vessel in which to explore Fiji’s beautiful coastline. We begin our journey on the inland waterway of the Deuba River or of the Lower Navua River (tides permitting), where we get acquainted with our boats before heading toward the coast. En route, we’ll explore the beautiful mangrove forests that thrive in these coastal waters. As we travel through these unusual forests, we’ll keep a sharp lookout for the local denizens that call this unique eco-system home; mud lobsters, herons, harrier hawks, kingfishers and fruit bats inhabit this area, which many refer to as “the Ocean’s Nursery.” Here amongst the “dread-locked” root systems of the mangrove forest, much of he ocean’s fauna reside until they are large enough to fend for themselves in the azure waters of Beqa Lagoon.
 |
We will emerge from the mangrove forest for lunch on a sandy beach. After time to relax, we’ll set our course for the open sea, where we’ll snorkel within coral gardens and the kaleidoscope of tropical fish that make this saltwater oasis their home. From there, our final leg will take us along the sandy beaches of Pacific Harbour. (Note: the actual sequence of the trip and elements included are subject to tidal fluctuations)

EXPLORER'S FACT SHEET:
FOOD & SNACKS:
We suggest that you eat a hearty breakfast before departure. Part way through our journey our guides will locate a suitably scenic and comfortable spot for lunch. The Rivers Fiji lunch consists of a “deli” selection, typically including meats, cheese, seasonably fresh vegetables, fruits, fresh bread, assorted cookies, and other condiments. Juice and water are also available. If you have specific dietary needs please let us know and we will do our best to accommodate you.
WHAT TO BRING:
Sunscreen, sun hat, sunglasses, swimsuit, shorts, T-shirt, bottle of water, beach towel, dry change of clothes for the return trip to your hotel, and a good pair of beach shoes (that you don’t mind getting wet). Wet suit booties with a sole or sport sandals work well. You will be able to store your dry clothes in the Rivers Fiji office. We strongly suggest you bring along a bottle of water. We provide water and other refreshment as part of our trip, however, it is still recommended that you keep a bottle with you in your boat. Please bring your own snorkeling gear, as Rivers Fiji does not supply any. Most hotels and dive operators will rent snorkeling equipment to you at a moderate price if you do not have your own. Rivers Fiji may be able to facilitate this for you. Please read the section on cameras and videos should you elect to bring them on your trip.
STORAGE:
You may leave your dry change of clothes and valuables at the Rivers Fiji office.
SEA KAYAKING:
Our sea kayaks are two-person “sit-on-top” models, which means your legs are not positioned below a deck. These boats are very stable, are easily guided with a rudder and foot pedals, and allow plenty of opportunity to relax in the sun and enjoy your surroundings while you paddle. Sun screen or pants is recommended to cover your legs.
SNORKELING EQUIPMENT:
Fiji offers some of the world’s best opportunities to explore the underwater world. With that in mind, we encourage guests to bring their own personal snorkeling equipment with them to assure they have the best possible experience. Alternatively, you might try renting equipment from your hotel or local dive shop in advance to assure a good, comfortable fit. Rivers Fiji can assist in the rental of snorkeling equipment.
CAMERA/VIDEO:
As you will see, the coastline is a beautiful area and as such, worthy of photographic pursuit. However, due to the nature of sea kayaking, it is possible that anything you bring on this journey will get wet, damaged or lost. While we do provide dry bags, we do not guarantee that they are foolproof. Though they usually work well in the normal conditions, if faced with an excessive amount of water (for example, in the event that your bag is submerged), they are not 100% sure to keep your equipment dry. Each individual must use his or her best judgment when deciding whether or not to bring camera or video equipment. It is important to note that Rivers Fiji assumes no responsibility for the care and/or safekeeping of your equipment. That said, we strongly encourage guests who are concerned about the safety of their camera/video equipment to consider purchasing a waterproof disposable camera.
SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS:
Don’t forget to bring any special medications (allergy, etc.) with you. It is also important to let your trip leader know if you have any special medical considerations before setting out on this journey. Please also be sure to inform us of any dietary restrictions you might have.
LEAVE NO TRACE:
In order to insure that each passenger experiences the same untouched beauty of the island, all of our trips practice a “leave no trace” environmental and social ethic. All garbage and waste packed in are also packed out. We also ask that you refrain from smoking while in the boats with other passengers and pack out all cigarette butts.
TIPPING:
Many guests ask us whether they should tip their guides, and if so, how much. If you feel that your guides have worked hard to provide a special trip for you, a small gratuity would be greatly appreciated. You can give the tip to our receptionist when you return to the Rivers Fiji office at the end of the day; it will be evenly distributed among the guides.
CANCELLATION POLICY:
Due to the extensive preparation no refunds can be given for cancellations within 24 hours of the scheduled tour.
